The soprano Elizabeth Watts will perform a programme of songs by Schubert, Brahms, Barber and Wolf with the pianist Gary Matthewman.

Elizabeth Watts

Elizabeth Watts, who comes from Norwich, is making a stunning career as a singer. She won the prestigious Kathleen Ferrier Prize in 2006, has been a BBC Young Generation Artist.

She last visited East Bergholt in March 2007, shortly after hearing that she had been selected to represent England at the Cardiff Singer of the World Competition. As a result she changed her programme for East Bergholt, and performed all the pieces that she had prepared for Cardiff. Those who had been at the concert followed her progress with great excitement and saw her as a finalist and also winning the Cardiff Song Prize. Since then she has made a highly praised Schubert recording and performed all over the world to great critical acclaim.

Her voice has been described by the International Record Review as "one of the most beautiful Britain has produced in a generation." and in a recent review of a Wignore Hall concert the Guardian’s Tim Astley said,

"Watts, winner of the lieder prize at Cardiff Singer of the World 2007,is already a major artist; but this struck me as marking a transformation from a good singer into a great one."

Gary Matthewman

Recently described as ‘movingly perceptive’ by The Times, Gary Matthewman is establishing himself as one of Britain’s leading young song pianists. He developed his strong interest in song early on in his studies at the Royal College of Music, and now works almost exclusively within this field of repertoire. Awards include those for accompaniment at the Maggie Teyte Awards, the Royal Over-Seas League Competition, and the prize for pianists at the first ‘Das Lied - International Song Competition’ in Berlin last year.

Abroad, Gary has performed as a recitalist in France, Germany, Austria, Spain, Switzerland, Netherlands, Czech Republic, Ukraine, Canada, USA, Brazil, South Korea and New Zealand. At home, he has appeared at the Aldeburgh, Newbury, Hay-on-Wye, North Norfolk, Bath and Sheffield (Music in the Round) Festivals, and at London’s Wigmore Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall and Royal Opera House. He has made numerous live broadcasts and recordings for BBC Radio 3.

Gary has enjoyed performing alongside some of today’s most exciting artists. These include Sir Thomas Allen (baritone), Kate Royal (soprano), Simon Keenlyside (baritone), Sumi Jo (soprano), Markus Werba (baritone), Sylvia Schwartz (soprano), Robert Murray (tenor), Elizabeth Watts (soprano), Matthew Rose (bass), Sally Matthews (soprano), Toby Spence (tenor), Geraldine McGreevy (soprano), Ian Bostridge (tenor), Dame Josephine Barstow (soprano), Cora Burggraaf (mezzo-soprano) and Stephan Loges (baritone).
